Migraines are a type of severe headache that are often only felt on one side of the head. They typically cause your head to feel like it’s throbbing and often lead to a feeling of sickness and sensitivity to light and sound.
A common and unpleasant health condition, it’s suggested that migraines affect one in every five women and one in every 15 men, lasting anywhere between four and 72 hours. If you suffer from migraines, you may be looking for an effective treatment, but may not have considered CBD oil as a viable option.
Can CBD oil help with migraines?
Research on the effects of CBD oil on migraines is limited. However, studies on the components of cannabinoids have suggested that they could reduce the pain and symptoms of migraines.
A study published in Frontiers in Pharmacy suggested that: “Cannabinoids – due to their anticonvulsive, analgesic, antiemetic, and anti-inflammatory effects – present a promising class of compounds for both acute [short-term, severe] and prophylactic [preventative] treatment of migraine pain.” It also stated that CBD oil can, “absolutely help relieve some symptoms related to migraines”.
In 2017, a study into the effects of cannabinoids on the prevention of migraines was presented to the Congress of the European Academy of Neurology in Amsterdam. A total of 127 volunteers who suffered from chronic migraines were split into three groups and given CBD, THC or a mix of the two. After more than three months of the subjects taking the substances, each cannabinoid had a positive impact, on average reducing the intensity of migraine pain by 43.5 per cent.

How should I use CBD for migraines?
There isn’t a recommended dosage or method of using CBD for migraines. However, due to the range of CBD products available, you have a number of options when it comes to how to take it based on your own personal preference.
Applying a CBD cream or balm could work to target the affected area directly. However, it could be more effective to use a liquid product such as Auridiol. This product contains a mix of hemp extract and butterbur in a liposomal formation, and it’s often used to remedy the symptoms of migraines. Auridiol absorbs to the target cells quickly, decreasing the time it takes for it to come into action. Simply take it orally, either directly into your mouth using a spoon or added to a glass of water.
